Casement Window
A window with a sash that is hinged on one side and swings outward like a door, operated by a crank mechanism.
Casement windows are among the most popular window styles in Canada due to their excellent energy efficiency (the sash presses against the frame when closed, creating a tight seal) and full ventilation opening. They meet egress requirements more easily than sliding or hung windows due to their large clear opening.
Common issues include worn crank operators (Truth Hardware is the dominant replacement brand in North America), hinge wear causing sagging, and weatherstrip degradation. Casement windows should not be installed in areas where the open sash could obstruct walkways or decks.
