Glass Railing

A guard or railing system that uses glass panels as the primary infill material, common on balconies, decks, staircases, and pool enclosures.

Glass railings in Canada must comply with the Ontario Building Code guard requirements: minimum 1,070 mm height (1,500 mm at open sides of stairs/landings in some conditions), and must resist specified horizontal loads. The glass must be safety glass — typically tempered or laminated tempered.

Three main mounting systems exist: post-mounted (glass panels between vertical posts), base shoe (glass set into an aluminum channel at the bottom), and standoff/point-fixed (glass held by through-bolts). Top rail may be required depending on the system and code interpretation.
